There is still a ways to go, trolls will be trolls. Even if Xreal was done there will be people dogging it out, just the way it is. It always not meeting up to someones tastes in gaming, so they bad mouth it… I hate trolls lol.
You know, as far as Slashdot goes, there aren't many trolls at all. Also, when many people criticize one specific thing, it's far more likely that it's actually something worth criticizing as opposed to some complex, orchestrated trolling. If there are lots of people who don't like something, it's worth looking into it and seeing if you can fix it.
Don't discount criticisms as trolling and think of everything as perfect the way it is and that anyone who disagrees is just wrong. I hate that.
Also, Odin, even though this is far from a 1.0 release, most of the artwork is already original, so it's fair game to critique it. I think that the main thing about the art that irks people is that it doesn't really seem to go in a specific direction. It just looks like the policy for getting artwork accepted for the game is “if it's grungy, it's a-OK!” Perhaps it's not the textures themselves as much as how they are used. Perhaps the level design just doesn't utilize the textures well. Or maybe the levels just don't have enough lighting. I'm not totally sure.
But the main artistic thing that bugs me, personally, is the weapon animations. I don't mean to be trashing on this game so much because I'm really excited for it, but the shooting animations really stick out, and in a bad way. When the characters shoot, it looks like they are having an arm seizure more than actually shooting a weapon. Another thing is how the players just float into the air after they die, but I'm guessing that this is a WIP?
Don't let these criticisms fool you into thinking that this game looks bad. This game looks awesome. Way better than any 3D free software game I've seen so far. I just think that it could be better to the point of epicness.
As far as what I enjoy about the art: I adore the spawning particle effects. Whenever I see them I feel like I'm in some AAA game. I'm also really impressed with the lighting on metallic surfaces, since they look pretty much photorealistic. The default character model is pretty yummy, too.
