Walking on Walls

Only the people in the IRC channels know what’s going on with XreaL’s development. I want to change this so I’m going to use this news oriented blog to show you new features and gimmics that we are working on. We are going to extend the gameplay by some new movement features.  One of these features is wall walking similar to Prey. I simply ported the required sourcecode from Tremulous. Now see how it looks like to walk on special wallwalk surfaces.

That’s awesome, this engine is really amazing!

While this is, of course, really cool, I’ve always found wall-walking in games to be more than a bit limiting. A related feature I’d *really really* love to see is that of gravity fields (that completely change the player’s orientation, regardless of their proximity to a wall). I think Croteam had *something* like this to implement their stampede of monsters on a curvy wall in Serious Sam — The Second Encounter.

Most topsy-turvy level elements could be achieved by combining a few simple gravity shapes: [1] simple linear (but not necessarily downward), [2] inward/outward spheroidal, [3] inward/outward conical (cylindrical being the degenerate case), and [4] inward/outward toroidal. The control points defining these shapes could even be animated! Their volume of effect could be defined with geometry brushes, just like the other fields, e.g. pain, in Quake-based maps.

I’m not sure how far-reaching this change would have to be — I can only imagine that fundamentally changing the concept of “up” in the engine might cause some complications. =p

Wow, I’d love to see a map using this based on this painting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativity_(M._C._Escher)

  • this is so good. i am glad to see it.

charlie: It’s the parentheses that are causing the trouble (even though both your links were fine).

I was wondering where you got the orange/grey development textures and if you can upload them?.
